START HERE: AH-64D Basic Training – 30mm Gun & Night Flying | DCS
Ready to take the Apache out after dark?
In this START HERE mission on Grim Reapers Channel 3, we get to grips with the AH-64D Apache’s 30mm gun and night flying in DCS World. The training takes us from cockpit preparation and hovering. Then it continues through to target engagements, navigation and a night landing aboard USS Abraham Lincoln.
Getting Set Up for Night Operations
The lesson begins in the co-pilot/gunner station, preparing the cockpit for low-light conditions. Afterward, we arm the weapons and set up the Target Acquisition and Designation Sight (TADS).
We also use George helper to help maintain a steady hover while working through the gunner’s systems.
Learning the 30mm Gun
The session explores two ways to direct the Apache’s gun: using the helmet-mounted sight for quick engagements. Alternatively, you can use TADS to find and engage targets at greater distances.
Along the way, the mission features APC columns and T-90 tanks. Additionally, Hellfire missile engagements also form part of the training.
It’s a chance to follow how the sights and weapons are used during a mission. Then you can return to individual sections whenever you need a refresher.
Night Navigation and a Carrier Landing
There’s flying to do between the targets, too.
The lesson includes navigating to waypoints in darkness, using TADS and map reading to help find the way. The final task is to return to USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) and bring the Apache down onto the flight deck at night.
Watch the lesson, pick a skill to practise and give it a go in DCS.
