What happens when a drone carrier faces two helicopter destroyers? In this Sea Power scenario, China’s Type 076 takes on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s Hyuga and Ise in the East China Sea.
The Type 076’s attack centres on GJ-11 stealth drones and Z-20 helicopters carrying anti-ship weapons. Hyuga and Ise respond with SH-60K and SH-60J helicopters armed with Penguin Mk2 anti-ship missiles and Hellfire missiles. With aircraft approaching from both sides, each force must launch its own strikes while defending its ships.
The Type 076 relies on HQ-10 surface-to-air missiles and 30 mm CIWS to stop incoming attacks. Hyuga and Ise bring ESSM missiles and 20 mm CIWS to the fight. Can the Japanese ships withstand the drone carrier’s air wing long enough to land a decisive hit? Or will the Type 076’s drones give it the advantage?
