US Navy Constellation-class frigate vs Japanese upgraded Mogami-class frigate—which would be the more powerful modern surface combatant?
In this Sea Power naval combat simulation, we compare a projected US Navy Constellation-class frigate against an upgraded Japanese Mogami-class frigate. The comparison looks at their weapons, sensors, missile systems and overall combat capability.
Constellation: the projected US configuration
The modelled Constellation uses predicted US specifications, including SPY radar and sixteen canisterised Naval Strike Missiles (NSM), supported by ESSM, SM-2 and RAM defensive missile systems.
Mogami II: the upgraded challenger
For this simulation, the upgraded Mogami is given the same defensive missile systems, with ESSM and SM-2 in its modelled 30 Mk 41 VLS cells and RAM providing additional defence.
However, instead of the Constellation’s sixteen canisterised Naval Strike Missiles, the Mogami carries eight.
Which frigate comes out on top?
How do these two modern frigates compare in Sea Power? Which design has the greater offensive and defensive capability, and how might the differences in radar, missiles, VLS capacity and armament affect the outcome?
Watch the simulation to see the US Navy Constellation and Japanese Mogami go head-to-head.
